Whisker question

How many of you trim your cardigans whiskers? I never have, but since Peaces injury was on her muzzle, the vet shaved the one side. That was 2 weeks ago, and the shaved side has whiskers starting and they are under 1/4 inch grown. Peace is entered in her next show in about 3 weeks. I am thinking at that point they will be around 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch long. Do I now leave them with that side growing, or trim both? Her scab should be gone, but the hair may still be a little shorter on that side. I think I can get away with it, though, its on the non show side, so only at the table would the judge really notice it.

Please let me know what you would do?

I would probably trim both sides, and then let them grow back out at a time that's more convenient. I don't normally trim whiskers on my dogs though, although Zach had like 2 really black whiskers that I used to cut off because they were more noticeable.

I would go ahead and trim them and let them grow out, if the you se the Judge looking, tell them what happened to her. She earned that battle wound and bounced back like a good cardigan - bless her heart

I agree with these other ladies...
I have a friend here in AZ who trims their Cardigans whiskers (they come from a breed that does it), but I've never known anyone else to.... Poor thing and her battle scar....

I have only trimmed Cardigan whiskers in instances where it will help the dog look better. For instance, if a bitch as a real doggy head, I probably will trim them off to help slim the face down. If a dog has one side black and the other white, I might trim it off as well. If I were you, I would probably trim them back and let them grow out like others suggested, but wait until just before the show and see if it still looks funny, as you might be surprised and not have too.

We used to trim whiskers back in the olden days when we had Aussies. We're talking 20 years ago now. Then we went through a stage where we would trim black whiskers on a white muzzle or vice versa. And we had a bitch who was more refined if she was trimmed. But more recently, no.

However in the case you're dealing with I'd make the two sides match and let them grow out together.

I never trim whiskers, even when Demi had one black whisker on her muzzle. Never had a judge comment about it. I agree with Jeri & Laura about trimming her for now and let her grow them back out.
